SMALL ANIMAL VETERINARIANS

Dr. Janet Gildner

Hi! I'm Dr. Janet Gildner. It's been my pleasure to work with the WVH team since 1998 as a small animal veterinarian.  I'm from Oregon, WI and worked in a mixed animal practice in Clinton, WI for ten years before moving to rural Whitewater with my three children, Steven, Emily, and Andy. We enjoy our family of dogs, cats, doves, goats, chickens, a donkey and horses. My hobbies include gardening, camping, kayaking, and just about anything with kids, animals, and the outdoors! It is my privilege to have such a great job working with pets and I look forward to meeting yours.

Dr. Lauren Schneider

Hello to all of the families and pets of the Whitewater community! My name is Dr. Lauren Schneider. I joined the WVH team in June of 2012. I grew up near the small town of Kewaskum, Wisconsin and since my first job in a veterinary clinic I have dreamed of being a veterinarian. I have degrees in Zoology and Environmental Studies from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and earned my degree from the School of Veterinary Medicine in Madison. My husband, Daniel, and I have been privileged to have a menagerie of amazing animals in our lives and this currently includes a corn snake named Goliath and our two dogs. Our black lab, Hawk, loves to give kisses and play ball, while our rescued blue-tick coonhound, Heidi, can't get enough of petting and sniffing.  We have two amazing sons - Adler, who was born in late November of 2013, and Corbin, who was born April of 2016. In our free time we love to camp, bike, hike, travel and watch wildlife. I enjoy working with small animals of every sort, from the furry to the feathered and scaled. I am thrilled to be a part of the Whitewater Veterinary Hospital and am genuinely looking forward to meeting each of you and your delightful animal companions!

LARGE ANIMAL VETERINARIANS

Dr. Tom Smithyman

Dr. Tom Smithyman is a 1990 graduate of the University of Wisconsin.  Originally from Hartford, WI, he has practiced large animal medicine here since his graduation. Tom is a vet credentialed in the monitoring of CWD in the deer and elk herds in our area. He and his family live in rural Fort Atkinson.  Tom likes to hunt, make things with his hands, and loves a good joke.

‚ÄčDr. Rick Halvorson

Dr. Rick Halvorson is a graduate of Oklahoma State.  He grew up in Rugby, North Dakota.  He has practiced dairy medicine for 30 years.  Most notably he is the official veterinarian of the World Dairy Expo in Madison, WI each October, inheriting that honor from Dr. Allenstein.  Rick and his wife Kathy live in rural Whitewater.  They have three grown children.  In his spare time Rick likes to brew beer and garden.

Dr. Matt Stever

Dr. Matt is a graduate of Iowa State University. Our horse clients like Matt's quiet confidence and patience around the horses, and he is equally at home in dairy practice.  He and his wife Dixie (one of our CVTs) live in rural Elkhorn with their sons.  In their spare time they love to ride their Harleys!  Matt is quite the beer connoisseur and likes to make his own, too.

Dr. Michael Miesen

Dr. Michael Miesen is a 2007 graduate of the University of Wisconsin School of Veterinary Medicine. He hails from a dairy/beef farm near Platteville and was captain of a collegiate soil judging team that won the national contest, twice. He and his wife, Stephanie, welcomed their son Emil in July of 2013, and their daughter Rosie in June 2016. Mike is a hunter-fisher-gatherer sort of guy who LOVES the practical joke!

Our Doctors Emeriti

Dr. Allenstein started the practice in 1955 when he bought the place from Dr. Marsh.  He is known throughout the dairy industry as a doctor specializing in foot health, as the first veterinarian serving the World Dairy Expo, as a regular contributor to Cowside Practice in the Hoards Dairyman magazine, and as a professor of dairy medicine at UW School of Veterinary Medicine. He also instructed several of our large animal veterinarians at WVH.  The dairy herd at the University of Wisconsin is funded by a foundation in Doc's name to train today's and tomorrow's dairy practitioners.  Dr. A passed away in October, 2011.

Dr. Fritz Engel joined Dr. Allenstein in 1958 and retired in 2000.  He enjoyed general practice, and thought veterinarians should be able to care for any animal in need.  While those days have been replaced by more intensive and specialized care by today's veterinarians, it is that James Herriott philosophy that endeared Dr. Engel to so many clients. Fritz and his dogs were inseparable. Besides making good cribbage board holders as seen in the picture above, they also helped him write his bills!
